Summer party food

Summer is the season of backyard festivities and late night barbeques. I don't know about you, but I'd say that the main event is definitely the food! I've put together a collection of a variety of different party foods that are easy to make and also on the healthier side. Party food needs to be easy to grab and eat which all of these are. Make these for yourself or for your very own backyard BBQ!
I am so proud of this post! I didn't really expect half of these to turn out as good as they did so I really hope you enjoy!

Cucumber cream cheese sandwiches
These are a great, lightweight sandwich. They are fairly simple (and meatless) so they should be a hit for everyone!
Serves 3 (adjust to your liking)

Ingredients:
Whole wheat or white bread with crusts cut off
1 tbsp plain cream cheese
1/4 large cucumber sliced

After removing the crust of your bread. Spread the cream cheese evenly on each slice of bread. Align the cucumbers evenly. Top with the other slice of bread and cut into 3 mini sandwiches.

Tuna salad veggie rolls
These rolls are great alternatives to a sandwich. The protein in the tuna will fill you up and the flavors mix together effortlessly.
Serves: 5

Ingredients:
1/2 large cucumber
1/2 large carrot
1 can drained tuna
1 tbsp mayonnaise
1/2 tsp Dijon mustard  (optional)
1 tsp sweet relish (optional)
Any other desired veggies

Use a peeler to peel long, wide, thin strips of cucumber. This will be the "wrapper".
Add about 1 tbsp of tuna salad to one end. Add desired veggie sticks. Roll.
You will have leftover tuna salad (a lot of it), so peel more cucumber to use it up. Or you could make yourself a tuna melt!

Fruit salsa with cinnamon tortilla chips
This is the Summer version of the Apple Pie Dip  I shared in my Fall Treats post. This is a great dip to share and the cinnamon chips complement it perfectly.
Serves: 6-10

Ingredients:
2 kiwis (finely chopped)
1 apple (finely chopped)
1 1/2 cups finely chopped strawberries
1/2 lemon
1 tbsp brown sugar
2 tbsp fruit jam

3-5 whole wheat tortillas
 Cooking spray or melted butter
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1/2 tsp cinnamon

Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.
Brush tortillas with melted butter or spray with cooking spray on both sides. Use a pizza cutter to slice tortillas into triangles. Mix sugar and cinnamon and sprinkle over tortilla wedges only on the top.
Arrange chips on lined baking sheet and bake 6-10 minutes or until golden brown, turning the pan halfway through.

For the salsa, combine all fruits except for lemon juice and apple in a large bowl. Mix chopped apple with the juice of the lemon.
Mix fruit mixture, apple mixture, brown sugar and jam until combined.
Allow flavors to settle for 15-30 minutes before serving.
Serve with cinnamon chips!

Fruit skewers
Now this one is pretty basic but just as delicious. It's a great way for people to grab fruit without digging their hands in it.
Serves: As many as you'd like!

Ingredients:
Wood skewers
Assortment of your favorite fruits
Melted chocolate (optional)

Chop your fruits into bite sized pieces and arrange on skewers.
For a decadent twist, drizzle some melted chocolate (milk or dark) over the fruit.

Iced Tea & Lemonade

{sorry I don't have a photo for this one!}
Serves: As many as you'd like!

Ingredients:
Lemonade
Iced tea (homemade or store bought)
Ice!

A fun idea for drinks is to have a pitcher of iced tea, a pitcher of lemonade, and a pitcher of the two mixed!

There you go, a few savory snacks, some sweet ones and some drink option! I tested these all out (duh!) and must say they are absolutely delicious! It's a whole lot of fruits and veggies without being just plain fruits and veggies! The cucumber sandwiches were my favorite for eating but the tuna veggie rolls are the best looking!
Have an amazing Summer party!

Summer Life Hacks: Tested!

The internet is loaded with life hacks for any occasion! Summer life hacks have become super popular this season and some of them seem too good to be true. I tested out the most popular ones I had seen and just my favorite "hacks" to see if they really worked. Overall, I'd say I was pleasantly surprised in the success! See for yourself.

I have always done this since I was a kid so I didn't even really have to test it (but it was a great excuse to eat more frozen treats!). All you do is cut a slit in a yogurt cup, insert a Popsicle stick or spoon (really anything) and freeze for a few hours. The end result is a delicious, creamy, frozen treat!

Verdict: SUCCESS!

This one caught my attention so I decided to give it a go! What it is:  a little scent booster bag that you hang in your closet or drawers to make your clothing and linens smell nice.
I poured about a tablespoon of these Gain scent booster "thingys" (not exactly sure what to call them) into a little drawstring mesh bag and hung it in the center of my closet. Now whenever I open the door, it smells great and my clothes do as well!

 Verdict: SUCCESS!

I was super skeptical about this one, and to my surprise, it worked! This is supposed to turn any cup into a no spill cup. All you do is cover the top with Press'n Seal, poke a hole for your straw and you're set. I even tipped it upside down and nothing spilled. However it did start to leak a bit after being upside down for a few seconds but any cup would do the same.

 Verdict: SUCCESS!

I was really hoping this one would work. This "hack" said that if you put your ice cream in a Ziploc bag in the freezer, it will be soft and ready to scoop every time. This was not the case. After having it in the bag overnight, it was just as hard to scoop the next day.

Verdict: FAIL :(

This one I half made up, half found inspiration on Pinterest. There are tons of ideas out there on how to hide valuables at the beach. The first idea is to place valuables in an empty makeup wipe package. The second, an empty pad package... I did try the first one but not the second. However I have no reason to believe that someone would try to steal a pad!? Unless of course they were desperate..?

 Verdict: SUCCESS!

This is one of the most popular ones I have seen. It's unbelievably simple. All you do is poke a hole in a cupcake liner, put your straw through, and you have a drink cover to keep bugs away. This one does work. The cupcake liner slides around a bit but it's no big deal breaker.

 Verdict: SUCCESS!

Freezing your glass for 30-60 minutes before using it definitely helps a bit to keep your cold drinks cold on hot Summer days!

 Verdict: SUCCESS!

Tan tattoos. The concept would be helpful to me if only I could tan. I mostly just burn. This isn't a fail simply because I'm bitter about not tanning, it actually didn't work well. The glue didn't go on nicely at all. It was just a thin, scraggly line. When I tried to fix it I made a big, blob mess as you can see. Maybe this fail is due to my low artistic skills but I have to say, it was a fail for me. I'd try tanning with stickers.

 Verdict: FAIL :(

This one was quite popular too. Using cupcake liners (again) to catch the drips from your Popsicle. This works nicely and keeps your fingers sticky-free!

Verdict: SUCCESS!

This isn't much of a life hack, more of just a DIY I threw in here. Adding some chopped up fruit to a large pitcher of water creates a light, infused taste to the water. It's really quite refreshing!

 Verdict: SUCCESS!

OK, I'm going to be honest, I did not test this hack. Of course the one day I test all of these life hacks, it is cloudy and gloomy.  I don't see why this wouldn't work though and I am excited to try it out one day. Let me know if you have tried it, and how well it works!

Verdict: SUCCESS(ful-ish)!

9 out of 11 Life Hacks were successful! That's an 82% success rate which I'm pretty happy with.

 Have a good day! :)

Summer workout ideas + how to beat the heat!

Summer is definitely a strain on my motivation to workout. There are so many things I'd rather be doing than working out in the heat. The solution: Switching up your workouts and working around the heat. I thought I'd share some ideas of Summer workouts and ways to beat the heat. There are so many more options to get fit than hitting the gym for hours a day! Carry on working out throughout the Summer, but also make sure to take breaks. Try to take at least 1 rest day a week and if you feel like skipping a workout, do it! You need to enjoy your Summer while you can!

BEACH RUN
Running on the sand, or any different terrain, can increase the intensity of your workout. Just make use to take proper precautions so that you don't overheat or overwork.

BIKE RIDE
I personally really enjoy bike rides in the Summer. Either grab a friend or go alone! It's a great leg exercise and it can be really therapeutic alone!

BLOGILATES/YOUTUBE VIDEOS
Blogilates is one of my favorite workouts to do! They are really unique you tube videos that work all of your muscles. Any other YouTube videos you like are great too since you're basically getting a free fitness class!

YOGA
Yoga is a very relaxing, slightly lower intensity workout. It also help to stretch your muscles for other types of workouts. Take a class or do some poses at home!

FITNESS CLASSES
Head to your local gym or fitness center and check out the fitness classes they offer. Take one that appeals to you!

SWIMMING
Swimming is an amazing total body workout and you don't even feel like you're working out! Do some laps, swim with friends, whatever you've got to do!

BEACH VOLLEYBALL
Grab some friends, hit the beach (or a sand pit) and play a non-offical vb game!

HULA HOOP/JUMP ROPE
You know, those activities we did as kids? They can be quite a workout if you think about it!

TENNIS/BADMINTON
Try a new sport! You may like it more than you ever thought!

How to beat the heat!

~Workout in the morning! Not only is it much cooler in the morning (especially for running) it starts your day right and doesn't leave you time to procrastinate.

~Workout in your basement! My basement is noticeably cooler than the rest of my house. it's the only place I can bare to workout.

~Keep your clothing cool. Stick to shorts and a tank with as few layers as possible. Flowy clothes help too!

~ Stay hydrated! This is super important while staying fit in the Summer months.

Have fun!

I got this new top from Boathouse in Niagara Falls and I really love it! It is so bright and summer-y. I got it in a size to large so I'm hoping it will shrink in the wash. I wanted to play around with styling it a bit so I decided to share and OOTD!

The top is, as I said, from Boathouse, quit possibly my new favorite store.
Pants: Aeropostale
Boots: Forever 21

That's really about it! Happy Monday! (if there is such thing)

Lot's of shopping and change rooms!

Shopping and swatching!

My Summer was fairly laid back, but those were some highlights! I hope you had a great Summer and here's to a great Autumn!
